Gender Identity

Gender identity issues, sometimes called gender dysphoria or gender conflict, occur when an individual feels an inconsistency between their physical gender and the gender they truly feel or identify with. This most commonly exhibits itself as a physical discomfort with the gender one was assigned at birth, including the feeling of being in the wrong body. Children with gender dysphoria may express disgust of their own genitals or a certainty that they will grow up to be the opposite sex. Some individuals with gender identity issues treat this feeling by physically modifying their bodies to better match their gender identity. Gender dysphoria comes with it an increased risk for depression, anxiety, self-esteem issues, and bullying. In particular, my practice serves queer and trans adults, teenager, couples and 2+ relationships. I am queer and nonbinary/genderfluid, and am trained in applied Internal Family Systems Therapy specifically by and for the LGBTQIA+ community. As trans, nonbinary, genderqueer and genderfluid folks come out and become more visible on a societal level, I think it is important that we have supportive containers to explore what our gender means to us, with clinicians who share identity resonance.

— Lili Weckler, Associate Marriage & Family Therapist in Seattle, WA

At any given time in the four years I have been practicing, about two-thirds of my clients are people who do not identify as cisgender. I have participated in conferences and professional symposia related to this population, including Gender Spectrum and Translife, and regularly communicate and collaborate with other professionals who work with transgender, nonbinary, and intersex people.

When it comes to gender, We are all taught to believe that gender is an immutable & concrete binary that we must live by. When this binary is pervasively perpetuated we can sometimes feel like we don’t belong. With this message out in the world, any person that identifies outside of said binary can suffer from its negative impact; their mental health & overall well being suffer. Together we can address & overcome any barriers or experiences that are unique to our Trans & Non Binary identities.

— Valentine Valdovinos, Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Los Angeles, CA

We are put into boxes by the world around us beginning at birth. But when the boxes don't fit, trying to squeeze into them can be excruciating. Gender expansiveness can feel scary, especially in today's political climate. I support intuitive, curious adults who want to explore their gender and find joy in sharing their authentic self with the world. Together, we can help you to become your truest, most beautiful self.

As a trans clinician, we can talk about gender, and we can talk about every other thing going on in your life that may not have anything to do with gender, or maybe it has everything to do with gender. Maybe we are just searching for what gender is, or how we experience gender. We may leave with more questions about out gender than understanding of it. I am on my own gender journey, as are you, and I would love to create a space that is validating of you and your experience
