About My Clients

You--and your partner(s), family, kids--seek a conversational partner who asks questions you've not asked yourself or been asked, inviting you to consider new possibilities. You desire an accomplice in solidarity with you, in resistance to a problem world that tries to convince you that you're the problem. You want to belong, not just fit in, embody your values, and live in connection with others. You need someone who understands that living under capitalism is harmful, and that you can resist.

My Background and Approach

TRANS & QUEER FOLKS: Not just “gay-affirming therapy,” my practice is informed by queer theory. I understand the impact of hetero-, homo-, and cisnormativities. I question the assumptions our culture imposes about gender, sexuality, sex, relationships, and identity. I get that as a parent, nothing prepared you to have a gender creative kid. I won’t freak out if you bring your partners and their partners to a session. This isn’t therapy for queers, it's therapy that's queered. I wrote 2 books about this. YOUTH: With a background in youth work, experience working with youth at all levels of care, and a deep appreciation of the centrality of pop culture in young people’s lives, I’m uniquely prepared to connect with youth. In fact, I wrote 2 books about this. RELATIONSHIPS: How about having a conversation where you and the important person/people in your life come together against problems, rather than having problems that pit you against each against each other?

My Values as a Therapist

What typically gets called a symptom or problem is our response to the oppressive and problematic world we live in--something that matters to us is hidden by the problem. Anxious and afraid? Something precious to you is under threat. Despairing? You've held out hope for something & lost sight of it. Angry af? You're protesting an injustice. I believe we must honor these absent but implicit values and leverage them against problems. Living under neoliberalism has trained us to privatize social problems & carry the burden of individualism, to seek to "fit in" rather than belong, to optimize our "personal brand" rather than connect. People are meant to be connected, not productive. Our therapeutic conversations will be a place of solidarity and connection.
