About My Clients
Did you grow up in a controlling, high-demand religious environment? The adverse experiences in this type of setting can lead to feeling like you don't know who you are or what you believe. You may feel torn apart, like there are multiple versions of you in different settings. This can affect the way you treat romantic partners, coworkers, and authority figures. You may also feel conflicted about your identity, your sexuality, and even your body.
My Background and Approach
I grew up in a small fundamentalist Christian church. My siblings and I were raised by the proverbial village of our parents, relatives, and random adults from church. We were taught that people, including ourselves, are evil by default. Punishment often took the form of being made to feel shame, which is a feeling I carried with me for a long time. It caused me to feel like I couldn't be fully honest with my family, while still feeling like I had to live out the life they had planned for me. Starting therapy as a young adult changed my life. I realized I wanted to be a therapist and help people heal from wounds similar to my own. After completing my Master's degree in 2017, I worked with teens and adults at multiple eating disorder treatment centers, while starting my private practice. In 2022, I completed my level 1 training in Internal Family Systems. Using IFS, I can help you integrate the conflicting parts of your psyche and develop a positive relationship with yourself.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I now have an ever-evolving spiritual practice and belief system of my own, separate from the labels and institutional issues that come with organized religion. I strive to be an ally to women; people in larger bodies; and folx in BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and poly/kink communities. I do not necessarily have expertise in all of these areas, so please consult with me to see if would be appropriate for us to focus on issues related to these identities together. I am politically liberal but realize that this end of the spectrum is constantly being whitewashed. I think capitalism, especially when paired with Christianity, has created lots of problems in America, and am not afraid to talk about this with clients who feel the same way. As a white cis-het man, there are many ways in which I can accidentally do harm to clients. I am always working on my awareness and trying to improve the ways in which I show up for others.
