I have experience working in both short-term and long-term psychotherapy settings. Anxiety often responds to brief therapy approaches using methods such as cognitive behavioral therapy and solution-focused treatment. Anxiety may also be a secondary sign of post-traumatic stress so it is helpful to evaluate for this as well if clients are interested in doing so. Ordinary stressors and life-transitions are often improved with simple supportive counseling as well.

I see clients who are suffering from different types of depression. For some it is a response to recent painful life experiences while for others it has been a long standing challenge.

Once clients have become stable enough to address their symptoms then I am interested in what has contributed to the situation. For some it may be about the history of their original family dynamics. For others it may be more about physiology and possibly genetics. For others it is about making a life change.

Post-traumatic stress disorder is one of the most impactful issues for clients seeking counseling. Yet it is often one of the most treatable conditions as well. Revisiting intense experiences in a structured, safe, and supportive setting while also pacing the work can be transformational. The process is often rugged so taking the needed time and finding meaningful support and self-care is essential. There may be other mental health concerns in the picture so ongoing assessment is helpful.

Cognitive behavioral therapy has been part of my approach working in agencies, clinics, and private practice. I have found CBT to be useful for short-term solution focused counseling and for self-care and symptom management for more in-depth psychotherapy as well. Mindfulness approaches have become a welcome recent development in CBT. It is a versatile way of supporting clients to regulate their nervous systems while also dealing with major life stressors or with a difficult personal history.

I have been providing EMDR since 1994 after attending trainings in Level I and Level II with the EMDR Institute in 1994 and 1995. I have also attended additional EMDR training since then. I use this approach often in my practice and it has allowed me to provide much of the psychotherapy I offer for clients with ptsd. EMDR is not always for everyone. I usually provide about five to six sessions on client history, self-care, evaluation of any other issues, and community support.

Energy Psychology and the "emotional freedom technique" or eft was developed by a psychologist who was also studying acupuncture at the time. Although research on this approach is limited, it is often used for anxiety and mild symptoms of depression. Some of the approach can be used between appointments for clients who feel comfortable practicing at home.
